Kichwa’s Mucahua

Categoría: .
The Kichwa women of the Amazon dream of the Allpa Mama (mother Earth) and when they were girls saw the supay (spirits of the jungle) running among the trees of the communities. Their mothers and grandmothers taught them how to love the mud, to wear their best costumes, to paint their faces, and to beautify themselves to draw from the river delicate vessels (mucahuas) for chicha (sacred energetic, and ritual drink) to be tasted on the holidays.

Magical creatures and dreamlike animals populate their imagination and come alive in between their fingers. Turtles, snakes, and armadillos come out from the mud and stand up beautiful, delicate, with fine contours.

They do not know insomnia, since polishing pieces with a river stone is a task that lulls and puts the mind into a state of relaxation such that any yoga fan would wish to have.

Once they have molded the mud, they let it dry in the sun and after two days begins an enigmatic task. With natural dyes and small brushes made with their hair, they begin to shape a design that does not follow patterns, which is part of its historical memory, not ruled by measures and yet is perfect and full of meaning.

Sometimes they can be inspired by situations of daily life, others in special events like the day of their wedding, or in the skin shapes of snakes or in the trail of the flight of the birds. Other times the Allpa Mama dictates in dreams what to draw.
